blue ridge handweaving show

Golden BlushingIn the 2006 show, the winner of the Judges' Choice award was "Golden Blushing", Tapestry by Tommye McClure Scanlin.

The mission of the Blue Ridge Handweaving Show is to encourage and support both amateur and professional handloom weavers at all levels and to increase public awareness of their work.

The 2008 Blue Ridge Handweaving Show will be on public display, October 6-31, 2008, in the John M. Crawford Gallery in the Walker Arts Building at The Asheville School, 360 Asheville School Road, Asheville, NC.

The opening reception and award ceremony will be Saturday, October 11, 2008, at 2:30. Gallery Hours are 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

The School is located off Smoky Park Highway (US 19/23) as it turns into Patton Avenue. The entrance is Asheville School Road which turns off Patton just west of the NC Driver's License Office on the same side of Patton. The Walker Arts Building is located at the back of the campus across from the soccer field. Parking will be directed at the opening. See Asheville School Map and Directions

rules

amateur/professional definitions

Amateurs
engage in handweaving as a pastime or hobby.
Professionals
generate income by marketing their work or teaching handweaving.

Entrants must indicate amateur or professional status on entry form.

categories

There will be amateur and professional divisions in each of the following categories:
  1. Accessories - Scarves, purses, jewelry, etc.
  2. Decorative Functional - Linens, rugs, pillows, afghans, etc.
  3. Decorative Non-Functional - Wall hangings, tapestries, 3-D work, etc.
  4. Wearable - Clothing
  5. Yardage - Minimum 3-yard length and 18-60 " in width, plus an 8" square handling piece. Roll both pieces on a cardboard tube - do not fold. Entries submitted without a swatch WILL NOT be considered in judging.

judging

The judge is Bethanne Knudson: President and founder of The Jacquard Center. Bethanne holds a BFA in Fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute, as well as an MFA in Textiles from the University of Kansas. She has taught in several universities before becoming Director of Training and Technical Support for JacqCAD Master, software used to design Jacquard woven textiles.

In 2000, Bethanne founded The Jacquard Center, a training retreat for Jacquard Studies in Hendersonville, North Carolina, that attracts designers, professional artists and educators from around the world.

Identification labels, shipping, and other information will be sent to you upon receipt of entry form and Entrant's check.

waiver

The Blue Ridge Handweaving Show and/or Western North Carolina Fibers/Handweavers Guild and its agents shall not be liable, and Entrant hereby releases all claims, for damage to or loss of personal property sustained by Entrant or any person claiming through Entrant resulting from any fire, accident, occurrence, theft or condition while in transit to and from the show as well as at the show.

October 15, 22, 29 10 AM - 4 PM Weaving & Spinning demonstrations, storyboards in lobby of Crawford Gallery.
November 1, 1 - 4 PMHand delivered entries picked up at The Asheville School.
November 3 Shipped work returned.

gallery hours - sales

John M. Crawford Gallery hours are 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, October 16 - 31. The Blue Ridge Handweaving Show will retain a 20% commission on sales.
