Sponsor Award Criteria
Complex Weavers A certificate, a woven ribbon, a one year membership in Complex Weavers and a copy of the Compilation of Newsletters The award will focus on excellence in weaving a piece original in both design and execution with specific application of a threading draft or structure to achieve a complex interlacement of threads and fibers beyond plain weave. Workshop samples, kits, pieces woven under supervision or taken directly from published works are not eligible for the award. There is no requirement that the pieces must be woven on a designated number of shafts or on a multiple shaft loom.
John C Campbell Folk School Certificate for a weeklong class at the Folk School. Certificate is good until October 2009. Certificate does not include lodging or meals. The piece is handwoven and no more than 2 yrs old. We’d like the recipient of the award to give a presentation about their experience at the Folk School to his/her guild.
Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. An award certificate, a handwoven ribbon and a gift certificate for use on eShop will be awarded in addition to the opportunity to be recognized in SS&D. A piece selected for the HGA Award must be a piece of handweaving, handspinning, dyeing, basketmaking, felting or related fiber arts of special merit which shows a fresh, individual approach and expresses personal creativity, shows an awareness of aesthetic and functional considerations, and demonstrates competence in technical skills.
American Tapestry Alliance A ribbon, a color catalog of one of the exhibitions sponsored by ATA, and a one year membership in the ATA. In addition, a photo and article about the individual and the winning tapestry will be featured in Tapestry Topics, the ATA quarterly newsletter The ATA Award for Excellence in Tapestry Program has been established to encourage weavers to pursue tapesty, with the intention of achieving excellence in design, creative imagery, technical execution and usageof color. It is in keeping with our definition of tapestry - a handwoven, weft-faced fabric woven with discontinuous wefts - that the ATA Award is bestowed.
Handwoven Matted award of Excellence for Weaving for the Home, a one-year subscription to Handwoven and the possiblity of a photo of your handwoven and a short bio of the weaver appearing in H andwoven. The piece’s primary purpose must be functional. 1) The piece must exhibit exceptional sensitivity to basic design principles. Patterns should be used in fresh or unexpected ways. 2) The materials must be suited to the function of the piece. 3) The overall design should have optimum sett and beat, and a perfect hand for its intended purpose. The woven item must exhibit a mastery of craft and an understanding of materials. 4) The overall design should be pleasing and appropriate for the piece. For example, if a hand towel has a beautiful motif that won’t be seen when hung over a rod, then the overall design is not successful.
Penland Scholarship Award A $425 gift certificate which can be used toward any future textiles class. There is no expiration date on the gift certificate. TBA
Surface Design Association The award consists of a certificate, a wall plaque for the exhibit, and a one year membership in the Surface Design Association. The membership includes a subscription to the Surface Design Journal (quarterly) and to the Surface Design newsletter (quarterly). The names of award winners and the shows will be published n the Newsletter. Pictures of award winning work will be displayed on the SDA website gallery page. All surface design must demonstrate originality and excellence in design and technique.
