BEGINNING BOOK ARTS: a 2-day workshop | Jean McGrew | $50 plus $16 materials fee |
| Students will learn the basic skills of book arts and how to use the tools, including how to make a hard cover book. We will make 10-15 different books - some folded, some glued and some sewn. In order to make as many as possible, I will cut all the papers (sorry you won't have as large a choice of papers, but we can get a lot more done if we don't have to take the time to cut the papers.) You will be learning structures that you can use in making your own books at home.) Some of the books structures will be: single signature pamphlet and multi-signature variations, accordion pocket book and variations, flag book with hard cover, Japanese stab binding, variations of folded books. BOOKS: BOUND AND HINGED (Advanced Class) | Jean McGrew | $90 |
| We will begin with a simple structure. Each structure builds to a more complex one. At the end of the course, you will have five completed projects: a hinged single signature sewn to a hard cover, a hinged tablet portfolio (see attachment), a hinged photo album held together with posts, a multi-signature soft cover book sewn with tapes, and finally a multi-signature hard cover bound book. I anticipate that this course will take at least six weeks because of the need for overnight pressing, and we may need more time. If we do, we will just extend the course without extending the fee. These are beautiful books and you will be amazed at what you can do. Proceeds to support brfs 2010. | |||

| This is an on-loom workshop exploring a new direction to take fiber. Using the woven shibori technique for both warp and weft, we will weave a variety of samples to create "crimp cloth" - a permanently pleated heat-set fabric. Students will finish their samples in class in order to demonstrate this important step. Discover how the fabric can be used for entire garments and learn how to use the permanent pleating to replace knitted ribbing for a sweater or to add a knit look to the collar area of a jacket. What fibers besides cotton can withstand the process? What role does synthetic yarn (like polyester - yes really!) play in the process and what is the secret behind its use? Learn tricks for designing and sewing with the amazing cloth you will be able to create. You will need a 4 harness loom - 8 or more even better! Download the sign-up form here | |||
