Seed to Linen

Melanie Wilder

Due to its durability, beauty, and versatility, flax has been cultivated to produce linen for more than 10,000 years. Through a visual slideshow and talk to accompany, learn about some of the histories of linen cloth, the steps and nuances of making linen cloth from homegrown flax, some recent projects of fiber groups working to bring linen cloth back into the conversation including some locally community produced linen cloth. Stay for hands on time with some locally grown flax while we share stories about experiences with linen.

Melanie is a weaver and fiber artist working at the intersection of traditional and contemporary craft, with a focused commitment to sustainable practices. Her work is grounded in storytelling, process, and a deep attentiveness to the origins of materials. Melanie founded and has directed the fiber arts program at Warren Wilson College for the past 16 years. She lives in Swannanoa, where she cultivates fiber flax and a variety of plants for natural dye, integrating land-based practices into both her studio work and teaching.
